On our five-day adventour we will get to know the charms and traditions of three Slovenian regions – Primorska, Gorenjska and Central Slovenian region. Each one is interesting in its own way and full of various attractions.
The Karst Plateau stretches between the Vipava Valley, Brkini and the Gulf of Trieste, and is located in Primorska region. The limestone soil and water created a unique underground world on this plateau, and the soil enabled the development of incomparable cuisine. Only here the mild climate and the bora enable the drying of Karst prosciutto, and only here the red soil from the Refošk vine makes a good Teran wine. The unique flora accompanies us here at every turn. All this is Karst!
In Gorenjska region we will visit the Arboretum Volčji potok, which every year attracts crowds of lovers of flowers and nature. A walk through the landscaped garden areas of the park changes throughout the season and never disappoints. It stretches over 88 hectares, and includes five landscaped lakes and 30 hectares of forest.
Nearby, below the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, is the town of Kamnik. Its rich history and the preserved town center take us back to the time when Kamnik was the seat of the Carniolan principality and there were many craft workshops. The birthplace of General Rudolf Maister was once protected by a castle that stood on a hill above the town as early as the 12th century. To this day, a two-storey castle chapel has been preserved here, which still marks the panorama of the city today.
In the Central Slovenian region we will visit the largest park in Ljubljana, the Tivoli Park. It was opened in 1813 and renovated before the Second World War according to the plans of Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. Together with Rožnik and Šiška hill, it forms the Protected Area Tivoli, Rožnik and Šiška hill (Landscape Park), which covers 509 hectares. There are also two castles in the park, Cekin Castle and Tivoli Castle, which house the International Centre of Graphic Arts and the National Museum of Contemporary History, which we will visit as part of a guided tour of the park.
DAY 1: Arrival
Your arrival in Slovenia to Gorenjska region. Accommodation and dinner.
DAY 2: Let’s visit Karst Plateau (Tomaj, Sežana)
We will drive past Postojna to Sežana and there visit the Botanical Garden, where there are plants from all over the world and also from the Karst Plateau. After visiting the garden, multivision and the greenhouse, we will continue our journey to the village of Tomaj. Tomaj is a village in the heart of the Karst Plateau, where the bora carries the smell of the sea, and the vines are warmed on the red soil, from which it flows like healthy blood, red teran. The poet Srečko Kosovel spent his childhood in Tomaj. We will visit his memorial room in the family house.
We will end our day with a late lunch at agrotourism farm. We will return home in the early evening.
DAY 3: Greetings from the Kamnik mountains (Volčji potok, Kamnik)
Volčji potok offers us beautiful views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in all seasons and at the same time takes us through a beautifully landscaped forest and park. We will walk around the park and indulge in enjoying the view of the beautiful greenery and flowers of the park. In your free time, you will also be able to peek into the associated garden centre. After a walk in the park, we will head for lunch at one of the local restaurants. In the afternoon we will visit the town of Kamnik and get to know its rich history on a guided tour.
DAY 4: Ljubljana Tivoli Park (Ljubljana)
The walk will take us from the Tivoli car park, past the sports facilities to Jakopič Avenue. After that we will walk to Cekin Castle and visit the National Museum of Contemporary History and get to know the history of Slovenia in the 20th century. Followed by a walk to Tivoli Castle and a tour of the International Centre of Graphic Arts, which shows the rich history of graphic creativity in Slovenia.
