The natural beauties of the Bohinj basin have always been attracting many visitors from all over the world. For centuries, the inhabitants of this remote part of Slovenia, at the foot of the Julian Alps, have been looking for ways to survive and develop their own culture. Heaters, old ironworks, sacral buildings and cuisine are the reminders of a hard life in these remote but beautiful places.
Jezersko also offers the experience of unspoiled nature in the embrace of the mountains. A popular starting point for ascents to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, it offers not only natural heritage, but also an interesting history, which is reflected mainly in the sacral and profane architectural heritage of the place.
Along we will also get to know the traditional Slovenian breakfast, which consists of bread, butter, honey, milk and apples. Breakfast ingredients are based on local organic production. The product is designed as a set of experiences of learning about the process of producing ingredients and related cultural heritage.
DAY 1: Heritage of Bohinj
Municipality of Bohinj lies in the heart of the Triglav National Park. Here, cultural heritage intertwines with the natural beauties of the Julian Alps. A visit to the Tomaž Godec Museum will give us an insight into the history of these places. Then with a short drive we will visit Lake Bohinj, where we will enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and the mountains that surround it.
We will visit the Church of St. John the Baptist, famous for its Gothic paintings. Our next stop will be in the village of Studor, where after a short walk we will visit a local farm and refresh ourselves with local delicacies. After lunch, we will visit Oplen House and get to know the simple life in Bohinj once upon a time.
DAY 2: In the heart of the Alps – Jezersko (Zgornje Jezersko)
The path to Jezersko valley will lead us through the picturesque Kokra valley to the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. In the center of this mountain range lies the picturesque village of Zgornje Jezersko, with its characteristic farms and granaries, typical white churches and chapels. We will also walk to the source of mineral water “Jezerske slatine”, try it and continue our journey towards The Jenko Barracks.
We will visit Šenko Homestead and refresh ourselves with one of the typical seasonal dishes. After admiring the rich natural and cultural heritage, we will head to Plansar Lake and enjoy an unforgettable view of the high peaks of Grintovec mountain and the fresh mountain air.
DAY 3: Traditional Slovenian breakfast (Ljubljana, Radovljica)
The beekeeper will show us how to care for bees and the importance of bees for life. He will introduce us to the autochthonous Carniolan Honey bee, its characteristics, the work and clothing of beekeepers, and the challenges they face. We will get to know different bee products and different types of honey, and try them at the end.
This will be followed by a traditional Slovenian breakfast, which will include all the key ingredients of known origin. It will take place in one of the traditional Slovenian restaurants or, in fine weather conditions, in the embrace of nature in the form of a picnic.
After breakfast, we will visit the local fruit processing plant. Here the grower will take us around the farm, introduce us to the work of a fruit grower and related activities. We will get to know the local varieties of apples, the history of fruit growing and conclude the tour with tasting of the products.
Then the trip will then lead us to Radovljica, a medieval town on the Sava river, which has also been home to the Museum of Apiculture for more than 60 years. We will walk through the medieval core and see the museum, which preserves the invaluable legacy of Slovenian Apiculture. To conclude our trip, we will make a candle from real beeswax.
